Aurora Borealis

....This was one of the few paintings I have not done on location. Temperatures were 20 below zero when we were aurora watching in NW Canada, which made painting outside impossible. But as soon as we got home, I tried to recreate from memory what it felt like to witness this magical display. It was so ethereal, I wasn’t sure how to approach it. In the end, I soaked the paper and let the colors run, occasionally using a brush to encourage the vertical, curtain-like, effect. Since the constellations are visible through the northern lights, I used masking fluid to put them in first.
