Moai of Easter Island (Rapa Nui), South Pacific
.....The “Aku Aku” of Thor Heyerdahl fame, these enormous stone heads lie scattered in a seemingly idyllic landscape. No thousands of tourists here to watch me paint, just the ghosts of a past civilization whose sudden disappearance haunted historians for centuries. Archaeologists have now figured out that the slaves, used by the Polynesian aristocrats to work in the Moai quarries, rose up and slaughtered them all in a bloody rebellion. But by then the resources of the island had been so depleted that the rebels soon died out too.
