Waiting for the Ice to Freeze -- Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)

.... Polar bears gather each fall near Churchill, Manitoba, waiting for shallow Hudson Bay to freeze. Hungry after months of aestivation (the summer equivalent of hibernation), bears can move north quickly over the bay ice to reach their main food supply of seals.

.....This was my one lucky sketch I was able to do in the trailer at Churchill. This fellow was just outside the kitchen window (probably attracted by the smells) where there was a table I could work on. He got up and walked away, leaving a nice depression in the snow, so I was glad I had done him first, because I could still work on the landscape after he'd left.
